What Can You Do With Old VHS Tapes?

Oct 18, 2019

Now that you have had your VHS tapes transferred to DVD or digital, you’re probably wondering what to do with all of your old tapes. While some people opt to store them for back ups just in case, most people want to get rid of the clutter and free up some space!

So, what do you do with all of those tapes? You actually have a couple of options.

Disposal

Obviously, you could toss them in the trash. This is definitely not the greenest option and we don’t recommend it if you can avoid it.

For a better alternative, there are some online companies that will recycle your tapes for a fee (check out GreenDisk). You can visit Earth 911 to see if you have local recycling options.

Get Crafty and Repurpose

Are you a crafter? Even just a little bit? If so, you can do so many things with VHS tapes. Here are just a few ideas:

VHS Wall Art

Add some color to your home theater by painting VHS tapes and hanging them up on your walls.

VHS Furniture

From tables to shelves to nightstands, a quick search on Pinterest or Google will give you tons of ideas.

VHS Tape Lamp

These horror movie VHS lamps are PERFECT for Halloween! You could even make some Christmas ones. Looks like this would be a pretty simple project with https://whitespools.com/ some rope lights and a screwdriver.

Please Don’t Do This…VHS Tape Crochet Projects

There are a lot of tutorials online for crocheting everything from bracelets to handbags with VHS tape ribbon. Please don’t!

The actual “tape” part of your VHS is COVERED in toxic metals like chromium and definitely should not be handled for hours or worn next to the skin. We all want to cut down on waste, but the ribbon from a VHS should definitely be tossed and not repurposed for crafts.

What do you plan on doing with your no longer useful VHS tapes? Did you find any of the craft project ideas particularly inspiring? Let us know in the comments below!
